Director of Facilities

The University of Colorado Denver seeks an experienced Director of Facilities Management to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for approximately 1.3 million square feet of academic, office, residential, and wellness space in downtown Denver, adjacent to the Auraria Campus.
The Facilities Management Department supports the university’s mission by maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable environments. The Director plays a key role in advancing this mission by leading daily operations, capital improvements, deferred maintenance, and long-term planning initiatives.
This role oversees all aspects of facilities operations, including maintenance, custodial, and grounds services. The Director ensures reliable building performance, high service standards, and a culture of accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities include setting clear expectations, supporting staff, and ensuring consistent execution of operational priorities.
The Director collaborates closely with university leadership and campus stakeholders to align facilities operations with institutional goals. This includes managing capital projects, addressing deferred maintenance, and integrating sustainability practices into operations and planning. A focus on innovation, environmental stewardship, and process improvement is essential.
Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, business/public administration, or a related field, and at least eight years of progressively responsible facilities management experience, including six years of leadership overseeing professional and non-professional staff. Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) is required. Advanced degrees may substitute for experience.
The ideal candidate brings demonstrated experience managing physical assets, budgets, contracts, and teams, preferably within higher education or complex public-sector environments. Experience working with governmental entities, vendors, and contractors is highly valued. Professional credentials (e.g., APPA or IFMA) and experience with student residential facilities are preferred.
Strong technical knowledge of building systems, utilities, and construction principles is important, along with the ability to interpret blueprints and support energy management or performance contracting initiatives. Experience with process improvement methodologies such as LEAN is a plus. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to build collaborative relationships across diverse stakeholders.
This position is based on the CU Denver campus in Denver, Colorado. A valid driver’s license is required, along with the ability to work in varied environments and perform physical tasks as needed.
The anticipated salary range is $136,248 to $154,458 annually.
