General Function:
The Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Custodial administers and directs the University’s custodial services program to ensure that all University facilities are clean, safe, and well maintained. The position develops and implements campus custodial policies and procedures, establishes cleaning standards, work planning activities and staffing models, oversees performance management and budgeting for custodial operations. The position develops plans for, and responds to, weather and other campus events and emergency situations. The position provides leadership and supervision over custodial staff, assists in the acquisition of contract services for exceptional, specialized, or emergency services and maintains appropriate administrative and personnel records affecting custodial operations. The position develops constructive relationships with clients, coworkers, supervisors, and peers and presents the goals, objectives, and service philosophy of Facilities Management to the campus community, works collaboratively with Facilities Management leadership and other campus stakeholders to develop, support, and implement the goals and objectives of Facilities Management.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; a bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.
Experience: At least 6 years of progressively responsible relevant experience in custodial or relevant operations is required; ten or more years of experience is preferred. Required experience includes implementation, evaluation, and management of environmental compliance programming. At least five years of documented supervisory experience is required. Two years of managerial experience is preferred. Experience working in a unionized environment with collective bargaining agreements is preferred. Additional education beyond the minimum requirements may be substituted for technical or supervisory experience requirements.
Skills: Supervisory skills, particularly the ability to instruct others, are required. Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a team of workers and supervisors is required. Management and administrative skills, particularly the ability to develop and manage a budget, as well as analyze, organize, plan, and delegate, are required. Demonstrated skills in problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution are required. Knowledge of custodial procedures, supplies, and equipment and the ability to instruct others in their proper application are required. Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills are required. Computer literacy is required. Knowledge of contract bidding, specification writing, material recovery operations (recycling), and associated responsibilities are required. Familiarity with public access requirements concerning individuals with disabilities (current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for Accessible Design) is preferred.
Effort: The ability to move throughout campus, including stairs in all buildings, to inspect the cleanliness of facilities is required. Some climbing, bending, and reaching is required.
Certification: Professional credentials such as APPA Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP), Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Facilities Management Professional (FMP), ISSA Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS), ISSA Certified Custodial Supervisor (CSS), or similar are preferred. Candidates without certification may be required to obtain an appropriate credential within a reasonable period of employment.
Other: A valid driver’s license is required. Scope of the position requires responding to custodial emergencies or other unforeseen situations around the clock
